Hybrid Hurley

“Ash trees are now under threat from possibly the single most devastating pathogen ever to hit the post-glacial woodlands of Ireland” (Teagasc, 2018). This problem is set to have a massive impact on the supply of traditional hurleys in the future, yet there is a resistance and stigma surrounding composite hurleys on the market today. This comes from the ‘one-size-fits-all’ nature of composite hurleys as well as the removal of the traditional hurley maker from the buying process.

My product is a substitute for traditional ash hurleys, while maintaining the customisable and bespoke nature of the traditional hurley. It also allows the purchasing process of the final consumer to remain the same - to choose their favourite hurley from the hurley maker, whilst having the option to make slight changes on collection.

Readily available (straight grained) ash is used for the handle of the Hybrid Hurley which greatly increases the yield from each ash tree, while a reinforced resin forms the bás (striking area). The final product is sent to the hurley maker where it will be crafted using existing methods to their own distinct style and their customer's personal preferences.
