Luxury Student Accommodation

The aim of this project was to convert the building at 34-35 College Green into luxury student accommodation with a public bar and restaurant. The current trends in student accommodation are starting to move away from standard small, packed rooms with no interactive areas and closer to more stimulating shared social spaces and all the necessary amenities as well as more private, personalised apartments. I wanted to design spaces that resemble a boutique hotel rather than hipster/hostel-like student accommodation.

The building I chose has a lot of classical architectural details such as wall panelling, intricate ceilings and Corinthian columns. In order to make it more contemporary, I added modernist sculptural details and modern furniture, but retained the original details in the building. The reason why I chose to mix modernist and classical styles is because at their essence, both exude simplicity, with clean lines and symmetrical proportions. I was very inspired by Neo-futuristic architecture because I liked the clean look of this architectural style and think that the simplicity of material and lack of ornamentation complement the more ornate architectural elements present in my chosen building.
