The Nest - Women’s Shelter

The aim of this project was to transform the Eurocampus school in Clonskeagh into a shelter for abused women with their children. Research of shelters uncovered that interior design is usually not as important as the functionality of the building. I wanted to create a safe innovative environment, where the building itself has a therapeutic function. The biophilic design was combined with modern technology to create a calm and nurturing space and to avoid a sterile environment.

The psychological impact of Biophilia, colours and shapes along with modern technology plays an important role in the healing process. In addition, the design was influenced by the strong historical context and the natural surroundings of the location. ‘Heroic women’ was a theme that impacted the design of the shelter as well. In keeping with the principles of biophilia, it was important that elements in the project were sustainable and that recycling and minimal waste were key considerations.

The shelter includes spaces with multiple uses such as workshop rooms, meditation, yoga rooms, kitchen, library with PC room, a playroom for children, community space and much more. The Nest is an inspiring place where women can mentally grow, become stronger and more independent so they can return to their everyday lives.
